Car buying FAQ
Which documents should I check when buying a used car?
Registration documents Parts I and II, VIN, inspection proof and available service/repair records should match the vehicle and seller.
Why should I compare the VIN?
The VIN should be identical on the vehicle and in the documents. Any discrepancy is a clear warning sign and should be clarified before purchase.
What should be in the purchase contract?
At minimum record the parties, vehicle details, mileage, known previous damage or defects, accessories, price, payment method and the date/time of handover.
What applies to private sales and liability for defects?
Private sellers can generally exclude statutory liability for defects by contract. In particular, an exclusion does not apply to fraudulently concealed defects or an assumed guarantee. The OFB template is intended for private-to-private sales.
OFB provides general information and its own sample template. Seek professional advice for legal special cases or unclear ownership/liability questions.
